The mayor of the Belgian city of Hasselt, Steven Vandeput, was giving an interview for the local channel TVL on Thursday and just started answering the journalist's question about the traditional gin festival, Hasseltse Jeneverfeesten, which takes place in October, when He was hit by a drunk cyclist.

The video of the incident has gone viral. The mayor suffered scratches and a large bruise on his leg, Belgian media reported, and his assistant promptly hit the occasional cyclist, who fell to the ground along with the bike. It turned out that the attack was deliberate and the assailant was known for criticizing Vandeput's policies.

The man on the bicycle then continued with insults and tried to attack the mayor, interfering in a second shot taken by the channel team. He was finally arrested by the Police and slept in a cell. The mayor remained calm during the event and decided not to file the complaint, so the cyclist was released when he was already sober.

Vandeput told local media that he is not planning to hire a bodyguard yet and feels safe in the city. He added that "a bicycle is not a knife," and that the man's strong opinions were no secret, as were his problems with alcohol.
