The Grupo Modelo de México, which produces the Corona Extra beer brand, among others, announced this Thursday the temporary suspension of the production and marketing of its beverages, in compliance with the sanitary emergency decree promulgated by the Mexican Government to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The stoppage of the operations of the brewery will take place from next April 5. Essential activities are those related to health, security, justice, public services, energy or food provision, including agribusiness.

"In the event that the federal government considers it appropriate to issue some clarification confirming beer as an agro-industrial product, at Grupo Modelo we are ready to execute a plan with more than 75% of our staff working from home and, at the same time, guaranteeing the beer supply, "stresses the company, which also produces beer from the Estrella, Modelo, Pacífico, Victoria and Bud Light brands, among others.

So far, Mexico has registered 1,510 confirmed cases of covid-19 and a total of 50 deaths.
