A gardener risks his life to rescue a dog washed away from a damJan 252021
After falling into the water, the animal managed to find safety momentarily on a rock.
A gardener in South Africa rescued a dog that had been swept away from a dam while following its owner, Sapeople reports. The events occurred on January 16 at Bell Park Dam, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and were recorded by a witness.
The canine, named Scamp, was trying to follow its owner through the upper reaches of the dam, when it was swept away by the water and slid down the concrete slope towards the rapids a few meters below. After repeatedly disappearing under the current, Scamp managed to climb a rock and momentarily escape to safety.
James Stewart, 65, and his wife Stella, who were taking a walk in the area, witnessed the incident. In a video captured by Stella - which has become viral on social networks - the exact moment in which Scamp falls into the water and is rescued was recorded.
When he saw Scamp on the rock, James ran home in search of a rope to try to rescue him, at which point gardener Amos Ndlovu offered to go into the water to save the canine.
With the rope tied around his waist, Amos managed to reach the rock, win the dog's trust, and return with him to shore.
"Once he was safe in my arms, he trusted me and he didn't fight, which made it easier, although I concentrated on not losing my balance and falling into the floodwaters," Ndlovu said.
