Captures by chance the precise moment when a plane crosses the Sun

Unlike other similar photos, this one was taken completely by chance from a location far from any airport.

An American fond of photographing celestial bodies accidentally filmed an airplane just as it passes in front of the Sun. This is obviously an optical effect, but the image of the apparatus is no less impressive, perfectly outlined in the center of the great solar disk.

Andrew McCarthy took the impressive image, which he himself called "one in a million", with a telescope equipped with a solar filter of alpha hydrogen, which highlights the chromosphere, that is, the upper layer of the solar atmosphere, reports Daily Mail .

"There are a lot of photographers who set up near airports and plan these shots and get them easily," Andrew explained. He, however, was lucky to get the image unplanned and from a location far from any airport.

It took just a second for the United Airlines commercial jet to fly 'through' the Sun on its way from San Francisco to New Jersey, when it was caught on camera by McCarthy, who posts many of his photos on his Instagram account.

Interestingly, in the video the plane is visible only when it crosses the solar background, and it seems that it disappears immediately once it has passed in front of the star. The phenomenon is due to "contrails scattering hydrogen alpha light from the sun," the amateur photographer explains on his Instagram account of him.

"In the video, what we are seeing is hot exhaust from jet turbines distorting the air and reflecting sunlight," McCarthy said.
